Tell us a little about yourselves!
Well, to start out, my name is Lauren and his name is John. We’re both 22, and he lives in Michigan and I in Ohio. It’s about a 4 and a half hour drive to see one another. Thankfully not too far apart, but i’m only able to see him once or twice a month. He and I are huge Transformers, Cosplay, and dinosaur fanatics. He’s also definitely the more active of the two of us, haha!
How did the two of you meet? What were your first impressions of each other?
We met in the summer of June, 2015 at Indy Pop Con, a gaming convention in Indiana. It had been my first con and my first cosplay there as well, and i was SUPER nervous! It’s kinda funny how things played out, really. I had actually met him on Friday for a brief moment, he was with his friend who was dressed as a Spy from TF2 and he was a RED soldier, and me being a big Team Fortress fan, asked for a picture of them, but afterwards i went on my way with my friend to the dealers room.
I had seen them on Saturday again, but once again, my nerves got to me about meeting new people and i strayed away from them, too embarrassed to speak. And I had almost missed them on Sunday, and i’m so glad i didn’t. This time, one of John’s friends had come up to me in complimenting my poster i had bought, and as she talked to me, a few more of their group came up to greet me as well, and that’s where I met him.
We went to a few panels together, and me, being the cheesy romantic, had already started getting this big crush on him. I remember sitting behind him during a movie we had been watching at the convention and just silently wishing i was right next to him, holding his hand. (See i told you, cheesy, right?)He was just so handsome and funny and sweet and everything about his personality, even just from that short moment we talked, made me fall head-over-heels in love with him.
And as the day had begun to end, I had given him a big hug and exchanged contact information with him and his friends before I left with my own best friend back to Ohio. He then accepted my friendship on Facebook, and after a full week of gathering the courage to message him, i finally did. We moved from facebook messages to Skype and then, a month after, he had asked me out. I said yes of course, and the rest is history.
Tell us about the first time you met in person.
He had been really eager to drive down to Ohio after we had been dating for a month of two, and finally got some time in between schoolwork to visit for the weekend, and lemme tell you, that day was one of the most nerve-wracking yet exciting days of my life. I remember sitting at my front window just watching and waiting for his car to pull in, and when it finally did, I sprinted outside and got him right before he could even fully get of his car.
We hugged for what felt like ages, and i gave him the longest, truest kiss i’d ever given another person. I was shaking, he was shaking, we were just so, so happy. And throughout the short weekend we had together, we went to the Zoo, went out for a nice fancy dinner, and spent our evenings just him and i talking and cuddling and enjoying the closeness we had with one another. it was hard to watch him go back home the first time, i cried for days afterwards, but i knew i’d see him again, in a month’s time, he’d be back again.
What was it like transitioning to a long distance relationship?
It was rough at first. It was rough because i knew i couldn’t see him as often as i wanted to, and that i would have to go through things here at home without him being here in person, but it got easier the longer we were apart, to be honest. We see each other on Twitch at night almost every night, we game and have fun and he comes down to visit when he can and we always have a great time.
What are your favorite things to do together?
We absolutely love to play games together. Being far apart it makes it a tad difficult to find things to do other than chatting on video chat, and gaming is perfect for us! It gives us a way to interact and bond and grow our love even stronger. We’ve also been reading these adorable transformers comics together on screen share. He does these cute voices when we read that i always adore~ But when he’s here, we like to go swimming, visit parks, check out the Cincinnati Museum, sing in the car on our way to our destination, and go out for some late night movies and snacks. But definitely, and most of all, we just love being together. Every moment i have with him at my side is a moment i treasure.
Do you have any plans to close the distance?
Definitely! It’s all up in the air for right now, but once i’ve got some more money saved and he gets finished with college, we plan to move in together, hopefully in a spot between our two states so we’re not too far away from our families.
If you could give one piece of advice for other LDR couples, what would it be?
One of the biggest pieces of advice i can give out is the most simple one. Never give up. Things will get hard, there will be days when you really cry over not having your significant other near you, and some days will be worse than others, but don’t ever give up. In time it will get better. It may take days, weeks, months, but it will get better. Oh and make sure you don’t leave anything at your significant other’s house, you might not see your pants or your hairbrush for a month or so. XD
